What is Diabetes Pregnancy?

Pregnant women who have never had diabetes before but have high blood sugar (glucose) during pregnancy is called gestational diabetes experience. Based on the recently announced diagnostic criteria for gestational diabetes, gestational diabetes affects an estimated 18% of pregnancies.

We do not know what causes gestational diabetes, but there are some keys. Placenta or umbilical cord sustain a baby during the growth. Hormones from the placenta help the baby to grow. But these hormones also block the mother's insulin in her body. This problem is called insulin resistance. As a result it is difficult for the body to use insulin. He takes up to three times as much insulin.

Gestational diabetes starts when your body is not able to make and use all the insulin needed for pregnancy. Without enough insulin, glucose can not leave the blood and converted into energy. Glucose levels in the blood is high. This is called hyperglycemia. Reference books: Diabetes & Pregnancy: What to Expect, 4th Edition.
